Syracuse head coach Fran Brown has secured his first marquee recruit in 2026 five-star wide receiver Calvin Russell.
The 6-foot-5, 195-pound wideout hauled in 35 passes for 645 yards and 13 total touchdowns at Miami Northwestern, playing under former NFL quarterback and head coach Teddy Bridgewater, an alumnus of the Bulls. Miami Northwestern captured its eighth state championship in 2024, rolling past Raines with a dominant 41-0 victory in the 3A title game, where Calvin Russell hauled in four passes for 59 yards and two touchdowns.
Russell is ranked as the 21st player in the country, the third wide receiver, and the second player in the state of Florida, according to 247Sports.
He will join fellow Miami Northwestern alumnus Darius Johnson in the wide receiver room, along with former five-star talent Johntay Cook. If Cook decides to use his remaining two years of eligibility, the two could form a dynamic duo.
Hired on November 28, 2023, Fran Brown made an immediate impact in his debut season (2024), guiding the Orange to a 10-3 record—their third double-digit win campaign since 2000. The 10-win season is tied for the third-most in program history, and Fran Brown joins Paul Pasqualoni (1991) for the most victories by a head coach in their debut campaign. The 2024 team was led by Ohio State transfer and senior quarterback Kyle McCord, who provided strong veteran leadership under center in Brown’s first season.
As Brown continues to shape his roster and elevate the Syracuse program, he secures one of his biggest recruiting wins yet—landing a premier weapon on the outside who’s poised to make an immediate impact in the receiving room.
Russell becomes the Orange’s highest-ranked commitment in the past 20 years and just the third five-star prospect in program history—giving Fran Brown every reason to feel major confidence on the recruiting trail.
