Mike Gundy is out at Oklahoma State

The Cowboys let go of their long-term head coach after 20+ seasons with the program

Oklahoma State has fired Head Coach Mike Gundy after the Cowboys drop to 1-2 on the season, according to multiple reports.

Gundy has spent the majority of his career with the Pokes as a player and a coach. He played QB for Oklahoma State from 1986-1989, totaling 604 completions for 7,997 yards, 54 touchdowns to 37 interceptions, leading the Cowboys to a 30-16 record over four seasons.

After college, he began coaching at Oklahoma State, serving as the wide receivers coach in 1990 and the quarterbacks coach from 1991 to 1995. He then joined Baylor in 1996 as the passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach. From 1997 to 1999, he coached wide receivers at Maryland, before taking on the role of passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach there in 2000.

In 2001, Gundy returned to Oklahoma State as the offensive coordinator and associate head coach, a role he held through the 2004 season. In 2005, the Cowboys promoted their former quarterback to head coach—a position he has held for nearly 21 seasons.

Mike Gundy has achieved remarkable success as head coach of his alma mater, amassing a 170–90 record over his tenure, and becoming the winningest coach in Oklahoma State history. He led the Cowboys to a Big 12 Championship in 2011, and guided the program to 12 bowl victories across 18 appearances. He has developed standout NFL talents over his tenure, including WR Dez Bryant, K Dan Bailey, RB Chuba Hubbard, and DE Emmanuel Ogbah.

However, the past couple of seasons didn’t go as planned—Oklahoma State finished 3–9 in 2024, followed by a 1–2 start in 2025 that included a 19–12 loss to Tulsa, ultimately leading to his dismissal.
